Christmas
Irish Castle Centerpiece
(Not
to be eaten)
You
can create your own Irish castle with this recipe from
Pillsbury's 1986 Holiday Issue. It's a fun project for
the whole family, especially children.
1
15 x 15-inch square
heavy cardboard, covered with foil
4 1 lb. boxes sugar cubes
1 can white ready to spread frosting
decorative candies, such as spicy
gum drops
votive candle in holder
Centered
on cardboard, arrange single layer of sugar cubes (about
15 per side) to make 8 x 8-inch square;
leave a 7-cube space for door. Continue to build
layer by layer using icing to hold cubes and layers together.
As walls are built
up,
leave spaces for windows. Support tops of window and doors with strips
of heavyweight paper cut slightly longer than opening.
Build towers in corners. Use decorative
candies for window decor and on the towers around castle. Use heavy weight
white paper or cardboard to make doors; spread with
a thin layer of frosting and sprinkle
with sugar.
Let
doors dry slightly; spread a layer of frosting on the
side of cubes in the door space and affix doors slightly
open. For wreaths, flatten two
green gum drops and cut out a hole in the center. Spread the back with
frosting
and stick onto outside of doors. Spread thin layer of frosting on the
'ground'
around the castle. Make shrubs with green candies as desired. Finally,
dust lightly with powdered sugar for snow effect. Place
lighted candle in center.
To
store, cover completely with plastic wrap; store in cool,
dry place.
